Fighting Irish Ranked Seventh In Preseason Polls

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The Notre Dame men’s lacrosse team is ranked seventh in both the Lacrosse Magazine and Inside Lacrosse preseason rankings.

Syracuse tops the Lacrosse Magazine top-20 poll, while Virginia, North Carolina, Stony Brook and Maryland round out the top five, respectively. There are seven teams on Notre Dame’s 2011 schedule that appear in the rankings. Along with Syracuse and North Carolina, Duke (8), Denver (14), Georgetown (15), Villanova (16) and Drexel (17) are ranked Irish opponents.

Virginia is No. 1 in the Inside Lacrosse top-20 coaches poll, followed by Syracuse, North Carolina, Duke and Maryland, respectively. There also are seven teams ranked in the Inside Lacrosse poll that appear on Notre Dame’s 2011 slate. Besides top-five teams Syracuse, North Carolina and Duke, Georgetown (13), Denver (14), Drexel (17) and Villanova (20) are ranked.

The Fighting Irish finished with a 10-7 record last season following a 6-5 overtime loss to Duke 6-5 in the national title game. Notre Dame opens its 2011 slate on Feb. 20 in a championship game rematch versus Duke as part of the inaugural Sunshine Classic in Jacksonville, Fla. The Irish will take on the U.S. National Team in an exhibition contest on Jan. 30 in Orlando, Fla.
