Each Wednesday, UND.com will sit down for a live chat session with student-athletes, coaches, administrators and alumni making news in the world of Fighting Irish athletics. Fans are invited to join in and offer questions or comments for our guests, and if you can’t join us live, each chat will be archived so you can return to UND.com at your convenience and read what your favorite Notre Dame athletic personalities have to say on a variety of topics.
This week’s special Fighting Irish Fan Chat on Wednesday, June 1 at 6:30 p.m. will feature football All-Americans Nick Eddy ’67, Luther Bradley ’77 and Jerome Bettis `93. The trio of Irish legends are on campus this week to work with participants at the annual Notre Dame Football Fantasy Camp.
Eddy, the third runner-up for the Heisman trophy in 1966, started three seasons at halfback for the Irish under head coach Ara Parseghian. A three-time All-American, the Tracy, Calif., native led the team in rushing as a junior and amassed 582 yards on the ground as a senior to lead Notre Dame to the 1966 national title. Selected by Detroit in the second round of the 1966 NFL Draft, Eddy played four seasons with the Lions before retiring in 1972.
Bettis retired from the NFL following the 2005 season after leading the Pittsburgh Steelers to the Super Bowl LX victory over the Seattle Seahawks. Bettis finished his remarkable NFL career as one of the all-time greatest `big backs,’ finishing fifth on the NFL rushing list with 13,662 yards. A six-time Pro Bowl selection and the 1996 NFL Comeback Player of the Year, “The Bus” played for the Irish from 1991-93.
At Notre Dame, Bettis finished his career with 1,912 rushing yards (5.7 yards per carry), and caught 32 passes for 429 yards (13.4 yards per reception). He was the MVP of the 1992 Sugar Bowl when he rushed for 150 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Irish to a 39-28 upset of #3 Florida.

Notre Dame Football Fantasy Camp gives Irish fans an exclusive opportunity to “become” a Notre Dame football player for a week. Led by head coach Brian Kelly and his staff, the participants go through all the practices, training tables and meetings that a student-athlete would during a game week, culminating in the Blue-Gold Fantasy Football Game on Friday in Notre Dame Stadium. In addition to instruction from the coaching staff, 13 players that earned All-America honors for the Irish and nine players that claimed a national championship will speak with the campers, sharing priceless personal experiences from their time under the Golden Dome and in the NFL.
