NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Notre Dame men’s lacrosse players David Earl (Jr./M) and Scott Rodgers (Sr./G) have received national recognition for their roles in Sunday’s 8-5 victory over No. 6 Princeton during the first round of the NCAA Championship. Both were named to the ThunderBay Team of the Week, while Earl also was tabbed as the Nike Player of the Week for his five-goal performance against the Tigers.
The five tallies from Earl (Simsbury, Conn./Westminster School) matched the most goals ever scored by a Notre Dame player in an NCAA Tournament game. It also was a single-game career-high total for the junior midfielder. Earl has 20 goals and three assists this season.
Rodgers (Wantagh, N.Y./MacArthur) made 14 saves and the five goals were the fewest allowed by a Fighting Irish squad in NCAA Championship play. Rodgers and the Notre Dame defense surrendered just one second-half goal and held Princeton scoreless for the final 22:13 of the contest en route to the victory. Rodgers ranks sixth nationally in goals-against average (7.99) and eighth in save percentage (.584).
The 14th-ranked Fighting Irish (8-6) will face No. 3 Maryland (12-3) at noon (ET) on Saturday, May 22 in the quarterfinals of the 2010 NCAA Championship in Princeton, N.J.
