Deschner, Smith Sweep ACC Weekly Honors

NOTRE DAME, Ind. — After an impressive opening weekend at the Ohio State Invitational, the Irish swept the first ACC weekly honors of the season. Senior foilist Stefani Deschner and junior sabreur Jared Smith both claimed ACC Fencer of the Week honors, the conference announced Wednesday morning.

Deschner and the women’s foil team were dominant the entire weekend through their six matches. Deschner finished the weekend unblemished with a 17-0 individual record and the women’s foil team as a whole went 50-4. The Irish women’s team went 6-0 on the weekend and the most points they allowed in a match was seven.

Smith also put together a perfect weekend, finishing the competition with a 12-0 record through four matches. The men’s sabre squad went 35-10 in five matches and the whole squad was 5-0 against Penn State (2x), Ohio State, NJIT and Air Force.

Up next for the Irish will be a trip to Evanston for the Northwestern Duals. They kick off next Sunday, February 21 and it will be the final dual meet for the Irish before the ACC Championships on February 27-28.
