NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Former University of Notre Dame All-American David Earl (`11) will be competing with Canada at the 2014 Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) World Championships, which will take place July 10-19 at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, Colo.
A record 38 nations will participate in this year’s tournament and there will be 142 games over the 10 days of the event. The field is broken into nine divisions, with the top six teams competing in the Blue Division. The other eight divisions all have four teams and are not grouped by world ranking.
Canada resides in the Blue Division along with Australia, England, the Iroquois National Team, Japan and the United States. Canada opens play July 10 versus the U.S. The U.S. defeated Canada, 12-10, in the title game of the 2010 world championships in Manchester, England. Canada is pursuing its third FIL World Championships crown.
The Blue Division has six days of pool play (July 10-15) and the top four teams from that division advance to the quarterfinal round. The top two seeds receive a bye into the semifinals. The other eight divisions have three pool-play games and will begin bracket play on July 14. The top team in each of the eight divisions after pool play will have the opportunity to advance to the quarterfinal round of the championship bracket.
Earl, a midfielder, currently plays professionally for the Chesapeake Bayhawks (MLL) and the Minnesota Swarm (NLL). Earl played in 62 games for the Fighting Irish from 2008-11 and tallied 51 goals and 22 assists. He earned first team All-America honors in 2011 along with being named the BIG EAST Midfielder of the Year.
Earl is the third Notre Dame alum to participate in the world championships, which take place every four years. Todd Rassas (`98) won a gold medal with the U.S. in 2002 and then was part of the squad that captured silver in 2006. D.J. Driscoll (`06) helped the U.S. reclaim gold in 2010.
