Crysti Foote Selected BIG EAST Offensive Player Of The Week

Feb. 27, 2006

Notre Dame, Ind. – Notre Dame senior women’s lacrosse standout, Crysti Foote (Suffern, N.Y.) got her final season with the Irish off to a fast start as she was selected the BIG EAST offensive player of the week for the week ending Feb. 26. A unanimous preseason all-BIG EAST selection, Foote scored 12 goals and added three assists for 15 points in wins at California and Stanford last weekend.

In Notre Dame’s 23-11 win over California in the season opener, Foote set an Irish single-game mark with nine goals and 11 points in the victory. Included among the nine goals were two free-position goals and the eventual game winner at the end of the first half.

The previous record for goals in a game was seven with the mark set by Courtney Calabrese `99 and set on April 18, 1998 versus Gannon. The previous points record was nine and was done three times. Kerry Callahan `99 twice scored nine points in a game – March 24, 1997 (6g, 3a) versus Stanford and March 28, 1998 (3g, 6a) in a game versus Connecticut. The most recent player to record nine points was Lael O’Shaughnessy `01 who scored six goals with three assists on March 28, 1999 against Connecticut.

Besides Foote’s marks versus California, Notre Dame’s 23 goals set a team record school for goals in a game, breaking the previous mark of 22 that has been done twice in the 10-year history of the program.

On Sunday, February 26, Foote scored three goals with an assist for four points in Notre Dame’s 12-11 sudden-death overtime victory against Stanford. The Irish trailed by five goals twice in the game, 5-0 and 9-4, but rallied to tie the game in regulation, again at the end of the first overtime and with 12 seconds left in the second overtime, before winning in the third overtime period. The Irish took their only lead of that game at 1:24 on a goal by freshman Jill Byers (Northport, N.Y.), her fourth of the game.

A first team all-BIG EAST selection in 2005, Foote has been named the conference offensive player of the week three times in her career. She took the honor twice in her junior year on the way to being named third-team All-American.

Foote and the 2-0 Irish make their home debut this week with a pair of games. On Thursday, March 2, Notre Dame plays host to Ohio University in a 4:30 p.m. game at the Loftus Center. On Sunday, March 5, the Irish battle Cornell in a 12:00 noon game.
