March 1, 2018

By: Robby Hamman

NEW YORK – Notre Dame placed two players on the first Tewaaraton Award Watch List of the 2018 season, as senior long-stick midfielder John Sexton and sophomore midfielder Bryan Costabile earned the distinction on Thurdsay evening.

The list includes the top 50 players across all three divisions of NCAA lacrosse and highlight the early contenders for the 2018 Tewaaraton Award, presented by Under Armour.

The Tewaaraton Award annually honors the top male and female college lacrosse player in the United States. The selection committees are made up of premier collegiate coaches and are appointed annually by The Tewaaraton Foundation.

Sexton (Sudbury, Massachusetts – Lincoln-Sudbury) is one of three long stick midfielders that were placed on the list. The senior entered the season as a 2018 Inside Lacrosse Preseason First Team All-American. Last season Sexton thrived in his role, recording career highs in goals (four), points (five), caused turnovers (23) and 46 (ground balls) on his way to earning USILA First Team All-America and All-ACC recognitions.

Costabile (Sykesville, Maryland – Mount Saint Joseph) leads the Irish in points and goals in the young season, totaling nine points off seven goals and two assists through two games. Costabile scored a career-high five goals and added two assists in the season-opening win against Detroit. The sophomore enjoyed a strong rookie campaign in 2017, recording 17 goals and four assists. Costabile earned a spot on the ACC All-Tournament Team after his impressive performance in the win over Duke (4/28).

Players not named to the initial lists have several opportunities to play their way into a spot as the season progresses. Watch list additions, if applicable, will be announced on March 22 and April 5. On April 26, the field will be narrowed to 25 men’s and 25 women’s nominees. Nominees can be players on the watch lists or players not on the watch lists, effectively allowing for a third round of additions.

Five men’s and five women’s finalists will be announced on May 10 and invited to the 18th annual Tewaaraton Award Ceremony in Washington, D.C., on May 31.
