Aug. 12, 2003

Notre Dame, Ind. – Community For A Cure, a collaboration between leading businesses in the South Bend and Michiana area and the Notre Dame basketball program, is set to take place August 14-18 in an effort to raise money and awareness for the Coaches vs. Cancer program, a fund-raising arm of the American Cancer Society.

Martin’s Supermarket, Blackthorn Golf Club and the WSBT Radio Group are the primary sponsors of this year’s Community For A Cure, while the Notre Dame Federal Credit Union will serve as the presenting sponsor of the second annual Notre Dame Basketball Coaches vs. Cancer Golf Classic, August 17-18 at Blackthorn.

Last year’s inaugural CVC golf event in South Bend raised more than $50,000 for the CVC program. Over 60 percent of that money raised a year ago remained in the Michiana area.

The WBST Radio Group (Sunny 101.5, News-Talk 960, Oldies 94.4 and Cat Country 99.9) will broadcast a radio-a-thon from 6am. until 6pm on both Thursday, August 14 and Friday, August 15 in an effort to increase donations. The Community For A Cure radio-a-thon will focus listeners on the impact of cancer in the local community. Feature stories on cancer patients and cancer survivors will underscore the personal nature of the disease, while health care officials will provide education and awareness on the importance of early screenings and lifestyle modification in order to treat the disease more effectively and to prevent it entirely.

Donations to Community For A Cure can be made by calling the St. Joseph Regional Medical Center Hotline at 1-888-CVC-CURE.

In addition to the two-day radio-a-thon, Martin’s Supermarkets on State Road 23 will host the Martin’s Free Throw Shootout on Friday, August 15 and Saturday, August 16. With a donation of $5, individuals will be eligible to compete in the event for the chance to win a special prize. Sunny 101.5, News-Talk 960 and Cat Country 99.9 will all broadcast live during this event. Irish basketball coach Mike Brey will be the featured guest on News-Talk 960’s Weekday Sportsbeat from 5:30 pm-7pm on Friday, August 15.

Festivities for the golf tournament will begin on Sunday, August 17 with a cocktail reception and silent auction at 7:00 p.m. at the Blue Heron at Blackthorn, sponsored by Lexus of Mishawaka. Tickets for the reception and auction are available to the public at $50 per person and can be purchased at either Lexus of Mishawaka or the Blue Heron.

The scramble golf tournament will take place on Monday, August 18, followed by a celebrity dinner featuring Brey and his coaching staff. Participating golfers in the scramble event will compete for an all-expense paid trip to the 2004 BIG EAST Men’s Basketball Championship at New York City’s Madison Square Garden.

Brey and his wife Tish have been longtime supporters of the fundraising efforts for the Coaches vs. Cancer porgram. Brey was the recipient of the 2003 CVC Champion Award, given annually by the CVC National Council and the National Association of Basketball Coaches. Prior to coming to Notre Dame, the Breys helped make the University of Delaware one of the top fundraising schools in the country through the program.

Notre Dame ranked sixth nationally in terms of money raised during the 2001-02 year as the Breys raised more than $90,000 through various events for both cancer research and the CVC program.
