Chiang Qualifies For NCAAs For Second Year In A Row

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – University of Notre Dame senior women’s diver Jenny Chiang has qualified for next weekend’s NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships for the second consecutive year after the Rochester, N.Y., native finished third on the 1-meter board at the NCAA Zone C Championships Friday afternoon in West Lafayette, Ind.

After a disappointing Thursday where she finished fifth on the 3-meter board, Chiang came out on fire on the 1-meter board Friday, placing first in the prelims with 306.70 points. In the finals she scored 257.20 points to lock up her spot at the NCAA Championships with a grand total of 563.90 points. Chiang can dive in all three disciplines at the NCAA Championships now that she has qualified in one.

Chiang has now qualified for NCAAs two years in a row, joining swimming teammates Kelly Ryan and Emma Reaney. Senior swimmer Kim Holden is also going for the second time as she also swam at the NCAA Championships in 2011. Only 19 other student-athletes in Notre Dame women’s swimming and diving history have advanced to two or more NCAA Championships before the foursome accomplished the feat this season.

Last year Chiang took 17^th on the 1-meter board to just miss out on All-America honors by one place.

Friday marked day two of the NCAA Zone C diving championships. In the 3-meter discipline Thursday, Chiang just missed out on an automatic berth to the NCAA Championships as she took fifth with a prelims and finals total of 616.40 points.
