Notre Dame goalkeeper Carol Dixon is the BIG EAST defensive player of the week for April 10.  In two games last week, she recorded 31 saves, including a career-high and Notre Dame-record 22 versus Duke.

Notre Dame, Ind. – Notre Dame women’s lacrosse coach Tracy Coyne has announced the 2006 women’s lacrosse captains for the upcoming spring season that starts this weekend with a pair of road games at California and Stanford on Fri., Feb. 24 and Sun., Feb. 26 respectively.

Seniors Carol Dixon (Pennsauken, N.J.) and Crysti Foote (Suffern, N.Y.) were selected by their teammates to serve as team captains for the coming season. Dixon served as one of the team captains last season while Foote will be in her first season as captain with the Irish.

In making the announcement, Coyne said, “I am very pleased that Carol and Crysti have been chosen as this season’s captains. The team has selected two outstanding individuals with proven leadership skills. I have complete confidence in Carol and Crysti and their commitment to leading us to our first BIG EAST championship and back to the NCAA tournament. Both of them know what it takes to compete at an elite level and have what it takes to get it done.”

Dixon, a fifth-year senior, begins her third season as Notre Dame’s top goalkeeper. In her two seasons as a starter, she has played 1,924:40 of a possible 1,938:00 minutes in the Irish goal. She starts the 2006 season, having played in 37 career games with a 9.73 goals-against average and a .480 save percentage. Dixon ranks third all-time in wins (15), second in minutes played (2,045:40), third in saves (307) and sixth in save percentage (.480) as she moves into her final season. In 2005, she was 3-12 with an 11.04 goals-against average and a .447 save percentage. In 2004, she helped Notre Dame to its second NCAA tournament appearance with a 12-5 record and an 8.57 goals-against average to go with a.505 save percentage. Her 12 wins were the second-best total for an Irish goalkeeper in the program’s history as was her 8.57 goals-against mark.

Foote comes into her final season coming off the best season of her career in 2005. A third-team IWLCA All-American, Foote turned in career highs in goals (34), assists (16), points (50) and shots on goal (115) in her junior year on the way to first-team all-BIG EAST and all-Mid-Atlantic region honors. Following the season, Foote, a native of Canada, played for the Canadian World Cup team at the 2005 World Cup. There she finished as Canada’s top scorer with 22 goals and seven assists for 29 points in eight games and a fourth-place finish. A preseason unanimous all-BIG EAST team selection this season, Foote has played in 47 games with 87 goals and 36 assists for 123 career points. She currently ranks fourth all-time in goals, fifth in assists and fifth in points on Notre Dame’s all-time scoring list.

Dixon and Foote will lead the Irish into their season opener on Friday, Feb. 24 when they face the California Golden Bears in a 3:30 p.m. (PST) contest. On Sunday, Notre Dame plays at Stanford in a game that will begin at 12:00 noon (PST). The Irish open the home schedule on Thursday, March 2 when they play host to Ohio University at 4:30 p.m. at the Loftus Sports Center.
