NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Notre Dame hockey freshman goaltender Cal Petersen was honored by Hockey East on Monday by being named the league’s Defensive Player of the Week.

Petersen was recognized by the league for his efforts last week at Maine where Notre Dame claimed three of the four available points in the hostile confines of Alfond Arena. Petersen allowed just one goal over a span of 85 minutes on the ice (0.71 goals against average), while stopping 43 of the 44 shots he faced for a .977 save percentage.

Petersen entered a wild 4-4 game on Friday night after two periods and helped settle down play. Petersen blocked all 10 shots he faced in the third period and overtime to help the Irish maintain their valuable road point. On Saturday night, Petersen picked up his seventh win of the year by making 33 saves and yielding just a single first period goal in Notre Dame’s 5-1 win over the Black Bears. Petersen leads all freshman goaltenders in Hockey East with his 2.63 GAA on the season.

Notre Dame is back on this ice this weekend when it plays host to No. 10 Providence College at the Compton Family Ice Arena. The puck will drop against the Friars at 7:35 p.m. on Friday night and 8:05 p.m. on Saturday night with NBC Sports Network broadcasting both games nationally.
