NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Senior Jeremy Barnes drove in two and went 4-for-4 to lead the Blue to a convincing 7-2 victory over the Gold in the 2007 Blue-Gold World Series clinching game on Thursday night. Barnes finished the three-game series with a .600 batting average (6-for-10), a run scored, a double and three RBI. He even tossed 1.2 innings of scoreless relief in a game two defeat.

After the Gold evened the series, 1-1, in game two, Blue freshman starting pitcher Dustin Ispas blanked the Gold over 4.0 innings of the finale. He did not allow a hit and struck out four. Fellow freshman Steve Sabatino came out of the bullpen and tossed 2.0 more hitless innings. He punched out a pair and walked one.

Barnes gave the Blue an early 1-0 lead with a RBI single in the top of the first inning. Sophomore David Casey pushed the lead to 2-0 with another RBI single.

The Blue added a pair of unearned runs in the fifth inning. Sophomore Greg Sherry raced home on a wild pitch (after reaching base on an error) and Barnes added his second RBI single of the game to extend the lead to 4-0.

The Blue increased its lead to 6-0 in the top of the sixth inning. Sherry ripped a RBI triple to centerfield and scampered home on sophomore Ryne Intlekofer’s sacrifice fly.

Sophomore Matt Scioscia and Barnes each led off the top of the seventh inning with singles. Scioscia would go from first to third on the single and raced home on a passed ball.

The Gold did make things interestingly in the bottom of the seventh inning. The Gold, hitless over the first six innings of the game, promptly loaded the bases with no outs (still without benefit of a hit). Junior Herman Petzold put the Gold on board with a RBI walk. Mazur got freshman Tommy Chase to fly out, but junior David Mills finally broke up the Blue no-hit bid with a bullet back up the middle that bounced off Blue reliever Steven Mazur. With the bases still loaded, one out and the Gold now trailing 7-2, freshman Alex Robinson grounded into a fielder’s choice and senior Ryan Connelly was forced out at home plate. Junior Billy Boockford then grounded into another fielder’s choice to end the game.

Ispas picked up the victory, while sophomore Joe Spizzirri was charged with the loss. Spizzirri went 4.2 innings and allowed four runs, just two earned. He struck out five and walked two for the Gold. Freshman Ryan Richter tossed 0.2 innings of relief and allowed an earned run on a hit. He fanned a pair. Mills worked 1.2 innings and allowed an earned run on three hits. He struck out three and did not issue a walk.

Intlekofer went 2-for-2 with two runs scored and a RBI for the Blue. Sherry also chipped in with a pair of hits. He drove in one and scored twice.

The Gold evened the series, 1-1, earlier in the day behind the great starting pitcher of freshman Joe Spano. The southpaw tossed 6.1 scoreless innings. He limited the Blue to just two hits. Spano struck out three and walked one. Sophomore J.P. McCabe finished the game. He walked two and allowed a pair of runs on one hit.

Chase, Mills, Robinson and junior Casey Martin all had multi-hit games for the Blue. Chase went 3-for-3 with a run scored, while Mills and Robinson each had two hits apiece. Martin went 2-for-4 with a run scored and two-run single.
