ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Eight University of Notre Dame men’s tennis players are a step closer to securing titles as the competition continues at the USTA/ITA Midwest Regional Championships at the Varsity Tennis Center at the University of Michigan.
On Friday, four Fighting Irish student-athletes locked bids into the second round of the main singles draw. Alex Lawson overcame a marathon first set against Cleveland State’s Joe VanMeter, 6-7 (3-7), 6-4, 7-5, while Eric Schnurrenberger similarly dispatched Illinois’ Toshiki Matsuya 6-7 (2-7), 6-4, 6-4. Josh Hagar felled Brian Page (Illinois) 7-6 (7-2), 6-4 and Eddy Covalschi beat Mark Singnil (Toledo), 6-3, 7-6 (7-4).
The Irish saw a quartet of tandems advance to the second round of the doubles draw. The second-seeded duo of Alex Lawson and Billy Pecor dropped Patryk Kocielski and Chance Conley (Detroit) 8-4, while No. 9 seeded pair Eddy Covalschi and Josh Hagar defeated Gleb Sklyr and Scott Christian (Marquette) by the same score. Meanwhile, Wyatt McCoy and Kenneth Sabacinski outlasted Andres Cobos and Daniel Cardenas (IPFW), 8-4, and Drew Dawson and Eric Schnurrenberger beat Michigan State’s Alexander Kim and Doug Zade, 8-3.
The action continues at 8 a.m. on Saturday with the second and third rounds of the main singles draw, followed by the second and third rounds of the doubles draw.
