BRIGHTON, Mass. – Capitalizing on a pair of errors in the field Sunday afternoon, Boston College plated six unearned runs to defeat the University of Notre Dame softball team 9-6 at Brighton Field at the Harrington Athletics Village. The comeback win, the second in as many days for the Eagles, clinched the weekend series for Boston College.
How It Happened
Notre Dame (29-18, 12-8 ACC) scored first for the third time in the series, pushing a run across in the top of the first inning. After Abby Sweet led off the game by reaching on a fielding error, Katie Marino ultimately drove her home with a sacrifice fly to center for the 1-0 Irish lead.
Boston College (25-18, 11-6 ACC) scored three runs on three hits in the bottom of the first to take a 3-1 lead. Notre Dame answered with two runs of its own in the top of the second frame. Alexis Bazos scored both Cait Brooks and Melissa Rochford with a sharp two-run single up the middle with two outs, squaring the score at 3-3.
After Boston College forged ahead 4-3 after two innings, Notre Dame attacked for three more runs in the top of the third. Marino and Rochford both singled, and Morgan Reed walked on four pitches to load the bases. MK Bonamy hit what looked to be a grand slam over the wall in center field, but the ball was brought back into play off the glove of the Boston College center fielder. Marino and Reed still scored on the long single to give the Irish a 5-4 lead. With the double-steal on one batter later, Bonamy was safe at second and Rochford scored for the 6-4 Notre Dame advantage.
A two-out Notre Dame error on a pop fly to left field prolonged what would have been a scoreless bottom of the fourth inning for Boston College. One run scored on the play, and set the stage for a three-run home run on the very next pitch that put the Eagles ahead for good at 8-6. Boston College tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth, all while limiting Notre Dame to two hits over the final four innings of the game.
