NOTRE DAME, Ind. — University of Notre Dame softball sophomore outfielder Alexis Bazos is set to compete as a representative of Greece at the 2017 Women’s Softball European Championship. Bazos was selected by the Greek Softball Federation to play in the 22-team tournament scheduled for June 25-July 1 in Bollate, Italy.

Bazos (BAYzose) is one of 16 players that comprise the 2017 Greece Women’s National Team roster, and is joined by 12 other college and high school players from across the United States who are of Greek descent. Additional NCAA and NAIA institutions with players selected to represent Greece at the 2017 Women’s Softball European Championship include Alabama, Aquinas College, Boston College, Charlotte, Farleigh Dickinson, Indiana, Rutgers, Sacramento State, Santa Clara, SUNY Oneonta and Youngstown State.

Bazos is the latest Notre Dame player to compete and train at the international level, with the bulk of prior international experience by Irish players as part of the U.S. National Team system. Past Notre Dame softball international highlights include Lizzy Lemire (red), Jen Sharron and Jarrah Myers (blue) combining to appear in the USA Softball Shootout, U.S. Cup, Canada Cup and Pan Am Qualifier as members of the red and blue Team USA squads in 2001.

In 42 games during her freshman season for Notre Dame in 2017, Bazos batted .294 with 12 runs scored, drawing one walk to reach base at a .333 clip during the campaign. Her five total hits and .333 batting average as a pinch hitter led all Irish players last season, while her .500 success rate reaching base as a leadoff hitter ranked second on the Notre Dame squad.

Greece, featured in Group B of the four-group, round-robin tournament, opens pool play at the 2017 Women’s Softball European Championship on June 25 against the Netherlands at 11:15 a.m. Central European Time on Bollate Field 2.
