SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Two senior members of the Irish hockey program, Trevor Janicke and Ryan Bischel, announced their intent to return to the University of Notre Dame to complete their collegiate careers in 2023-24.

The Big Ten Goaltender of the Year and a Mike Richter semifinalist, Bischel returns for a fifth-year following a record-setting senior season.

“I always dreamt of playing at Notre Dame, and these last four years have exceeded my expectations in every way,” Bischel said. “With that said, I am excited for the opportunity to come back to build upon this program’s tradition of excellence.”

Earning the nod in net each night this past season, Bischel recorded a 16-16-4 record while owning the highest save percentage through the regular season finale. His 1,183 saves was a nation’s best and led him to four Big Ten weekly honors prior to being named to the All-Big Ten First Team at the end of the season.

In four years with the Irish, the 2023 Hobey Baker Memorial Award nominee has a 32-25-5 record, seven shutouts, and a .925 save percentage. He returns to the Irish for his final season with big aspirations for what the 2023-24 season will hold.

“I’m looking forward to what this new group can accomplish,” Bischel added.

Janicke finished his senior season ranked second on the team in points (22) while boasting the most goals for the Blue and Gold, firing eight pucks across the goal line this season as an alternate captain. In addition to being the team-leading goal-scorer, Janicke was a 2023 Hobey Baker Memorial Award nominee.

The Maple Grove, Minnesota native has appeared in 143 games while wearing an Irish sweater, including all 37 this past season. A legacy at Notre Dame, where his father once played, Janicke is excited to spend another year alongside his brother Justin Janicke and the rest of his teammates and coaches.

“I’m back.”
