Andrews Wins Second BIG EAST Weekly Award of Season

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Following an 8-0 week in singles and doubles, including a win over No. 13 Alex Musialek from Kentucky, Notre Dame sophomore Greg Andrews has earned his second BIG EAST Men’s Tennis Athlete of the Week award of the young season, the conference office announced Tuesday.

Andrews, who is 11-1 at No. 2 singles and 9-3 playing between one and two doubles, went 4-0 in singles and doubles as the Irish went 3-1 on the week to improve their season record to 8-4. The squad’s lone loss came to No. 6 Kentucky, 4-3, at Eck Tennis Pavilion.

The Richland, Mich., native opened the week with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Northwestern’s Josh Graves. After a victory over Wisconsin’s Fredrik Ask by the same score, Andrews rolled through Musialek, 6-3, 6-2. He closed the week with by cruising past IUPUI’s Luke Bielawski, 6-0, 6-1.

In doubles, Andrews partnered with junior Spencer Talmadge to blow through four opponents. They opened the week with an 8-3 victory over Northwestern’s Raleigh Smith and Chris Mengel, before knocking off Wisconsin’s Quinton Vega and Alex Pasareanu, 8-5. The duo followed up that performance with an 8-1 beat down of Kentucky’s Musialek and Alejandro Gomez, before ending with an 8-3 win over IUPUI’s Patrick O’Neill and Bielawski.

Andrews has now beaten three ranked foes (No. 13, 24 and 115) on the year in singles and won 10 of his 11 matches in straight sets. His lone loss came to No. 17 Chris Mengel of Duke, 6-4, 6-4.

After a three-match home stand, the Irish head back on the road to No. 28 Michigan on Saturday in a 3 p.m. match at Varsity Tennis Center.
