April 16, 2013

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – After helping the No. 28 University of Notre Dame men’s tennis team to a 5-2 victory over BIG EAST archrival Louisville last Saturday, Greg Andrews has been selected as the league’s player of the week for the fifth time this season, the conference office announced Tuesday.

Andrews, who moved up to No. 85 in this week’s ITA singles rankings, defeated then-No. 66 Sebastian Stiefelmeyer in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1, on the top singles court to improve to 15-7 this spring season. The Richland, Mich., native has won six singles matches in a row and is 8-2 in his last 10 contests.

The junior opened the day by teaming with Matt Dooley at No. 3 doubles, as the duo dominated Jeffrey Brown and Chris Simich, 8-1, to help the Irish claim the early 1-0 lead.

The win over the Cardinals gave Notre Dame its second consecutive win over Louisville and the first on the road since 2007.

Andrews has won five conference scrolls this season (Jan. 22, Feb. 12, March 5, April 9, April 16) and eight in the last two seasons, while the Irish have picked up nine of the 13 awards handed out this season. Joining Andrews in receiving recognition have been senior Blas Moros (March 19), junior Billy Pecor (Feb. 19, March 12) and freshman Quentin Monaghan (Jan. 29).

No. 1 seed Notre Dame welcomes in eight other BIG EAST schools this week for the conference tournament, which will be held Thursday through Sunday (April 18-21) at Courtney Tennis Center.
