Senior Greg Andrews

Andrews Named Co-ACC Player Of The Week

Feb. 18, 2014

NOTRE DAME, Ind. — Last weekend, in the wake of the Notre Dame men’s tennis team’s defeat over then-No. 9 Mississippi State, head coach Ryan Sachire pointed toward the play of senior captain Greg Andrews, whose victory over Florian Lakat clinched the Irish win.

Sachire remarked that when Andrews plays with belief, he is as good as any player in the country. Sixteen hours later, Andrews turned around and grabbed another ranked-win for Notre Dame, this time helping his team beat then-No. 12 Florida in at the ITA National Indoor Championships in Houston, Texas.

These strong performances have earned Andrews the honor of being named Co-ACC Player of the Week. He shares the recognition with Alex Domijan of Virginia.

“It’s great to see Greg being acknowledged for the outstanding weekend he had in Houston,” says Sachire. “Greg has been building up to this these last few weeks, and it was really fun to see him playing at such an elite level against top competition.”

Andrews’ play and the play of his teammates have given the Irish their best start since 2005 and the No. 10 spot in the ITA rankings as of this week. The senior says the honor of ACC Player of the Week means a lot in such a strong conference.

“I hope to keep the momentum going into the weekend and have a great day of tennis on Saturday,” he adds.

The Irish will face off against No. 1 Ohio State on Saturday at noon before playing Ball State at 7 p.m. The second match will be broadcast on ESPN3 for the USTA’s College MatchDay.
