NOTRE DAME, Ind. — Sophomore midfielder Andie Aldave and senior goaltender Samantha Giacolone have both been named top-25 nominees for the 2019 Tewaaraton Award, the foundation announced Thursday, April 25th.
Five women’s finalists will be announced on May 9 and invited to the 18th annual Tewaaraton Award Ceremony, which will be held in Washington, D.C., on May 30.
Aldave and Giacolone become the 10th and 11th players in program history to be nominated for the award, which honors the top women’s lacrosse player in the country.
The Irish have had three players become top-five finalists for the honor, including Barbara Sullivan (2015, 2016), Jillian Byers (2009) and Crysti Foote (2006).
As a sophomore, Aldave has broken her own single-season program record with 135 draw controls in 2019. She currently ranks sixth in the country and leads the ACC with an average of 7.94 draw controls per game. Aldave is second on the Irish with a career-high 61 points (44G, 17A), has scored four game-winning goals and netted a hat trick in nine contests this season. Aldave’s efforts this season have earned her Inside Lacrosse First Team Midseason All-American accolades, one IWLCA National Offensive Player of the Week honor and a pair of ACC Offensive Player of the Week recognitions.
Giacolone has backstopped the Irish to 13 victories this season while posting a 8.16 goals-against average, .496 save percentage and 123 saves. During her senior season, Giacolone has become the program’s all-time leader in both saves and wins. Giacolone was named the IWLCA National Defensive Player of the Week on April 3rd, and has been tabbed the ACC’s Defensive Player of the Week on two occasions this season. Giacolone was also named an Inside Lacrosse Second Team Midseason All-American.
