2003 Men's Lacrosse Schedule Features Seven Home Games

The University of Notre Dame men’s lacrosse team will play seven home games during the upcoming 2003 campaign. Highlighting the home schedule will be visits by perennial lacrosse powers Loyola (Md.) on Sat., March 15 and Maryland on Sat., May 3 in the regular-season finale.

Notre Dame returns six starters and 16 monogram winners from last year’s squad which finished with a 5-8 record and shared the Great Western Lacrosse League championship with a final 4-1 mark.

The Irish will open up the 2003 campaign with a road contest at Penn State on Sun., February 23 at 1:00 p.m. The Irish and Nittany Lions will be meeting for the 10th time and this will mark the seventh straight year that Notre Dame has opened up its season against Penn State. The Irish have one five of the nine meetings.

Notre Dame’s home opener will be against Pennsylvania on Sat., March 1 at 2:00 p.m. This will be the third consecutive year that the two teams have faced each other with the Quakers holding a 2-1 series edge.

Following the meeting against Pennsylvania, Notre Dame will on the road for two games against Atlantic Coast Conference foes North Carolina and Virginia, two of three teams from that league on the schedule. Notre Dame faces the Tar Heels on Sat., March 8 in Chapel Hill, N.C. at 1:00 p.m. It marks the third meeting between the two schools and first since 1996. The Cavaliers and Irish will be squaring off for the third straight year and fifth time overall and will play this year’s game in Washington, D.C. at a neutral site on Tue., March 8 at 3:00 p.m. Notre Dame’s lone win in the series was an 11-8 victory in Charlottesville, Va. The Cavaliers advanced to the national semifinals of the 2002 NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Championship before losing in double overtime to eventual national champion Syracuse.

The Irish return home from the two-game road trip against the two ACC foes to play host to the Greyhounds in the 14th matchup between the two schools who have meet every year since the 1996 campaign. Notre Dame has been victorious in two of the last three meetings.

The Irish close out the month of March with road games at Hofstra (Fri., March 21 and Hartford ( Sun., March 23) before entertaining GWLL foe Denver on Sun., March 30 at 1:00 p.m.

Notre Dame’s first GWLL road game will be at Ohio State on Sun., April 6 at noon. The Irish then play back-to-back conference games at home against Butler (Thur., April 10 at 3:00 p.m.) and Air Force (Sun., April 13 at 1:00 p.m.). Notre Dame plays its final league game at Fairfield on Sat., April 19 at 2:00 p.m.

The Irish conclude the regular season with non-conference games at home against Harvard on Sat., April 26 at 2:00 p.m. and Maryland on Sat., May 3 at 2:00 p.m. Notre Dame’s matchup with the Terrapins will be the first-ever regular-season meeting between the two schools. The only previous contest played was in the quarterfinals of the 1995 NCAA Championships (a 14-11 Maryland victory at College Park, Md.).
