Notre Dame, Ind. – The 20th-ranked University of Notre Dame women’s tennis team registered a 5-2 victory over #48 Iowa Friday in the Eck Tennis Pavilion. The Irish won the doubles point and four of six singles matches to improve to 6-5 on the season. Iowa fell to 1-5. Notre Dame will return to action Sunday when it plays host to #75 Virginia Tech at 9 a.m. in the Eck Tennis Pavilion.
The Irish won two out of three doubles matches to clinch the doubles point. Senior Nina Vaughan (Corona del Mar, Calif.) and junior Katie Cunha (Mercer Island, Wash.) notched an 8-4 victory at No. 2. Sophomore Alicia Salas (Engelwood, Colo.) and freshman Sarah Jane Connelly (Oklahoma City, Okla.) helped the Irish clinch the doubles point with a 8-1 win at No. 3. Notre Dame has now won its last 19 matches in which it has captured the doubles point.
Notre Dame won four singles matches off the court to gain the victory. Senior Lindsey Green (El Cajon, Calif.) clinched the match for the Irish by picking up the team’s fourth point of the afternoon 6-7, 6-4, 6-4 at No. 3. At No. 1, senior Becky Varnum (Colorado Springs, Colo.) won for the Irish 3-6, 6-4, 6-4. Winning 6-4, 6-0 at No. 5 was Cunha and Connelly won 6-1, 6-2 at No. 6.
