NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Former Notre Dame basketball start and United States Olympian Bill Hanzlik will be the speaker at the 1999 University of Notre Dame Basketball Banquet, which will be held on Sunday, February 28, 1999, in the Joyce Center.

The event will begin with a reception at 6:45 p.m. EST where the entire Notre Dame team and coaching staff will be available for pictures and autographs. The dinner and program will begin at 7:30 p.m. EST.

Tickets for the event are priced at $32 each and can be obtained at the Notre Dame ticket office in the Joyce Center or by calling 219-631-8103.

Hanzlik, a 1980 Notre Dame graduate, was a four-year performer for the Irish, serving as team co-captain in 1979-80. He was a sophomore when Notre Dame advanced to the NCAA Final Four in ’78 and averaged 3.7 points per game on that team. He moved into the starting lineup as a junior and averaged 8.7 points per game as a junior as the Irish were the Midwest region runner-up in the NCAA tournament and averaged 7.5 points per game during his senior year as the Irish advanced to the second rounds of the NCAAs.

Hanzlik was a member of the 1980 United States Olympic team, coached by Dave Gavitt. Although the United States boycotted the summer games in Moscow, the team did play five contests against team comprised of National Basketball Association stars.

Hanzlik went on to play in the NBA himself for the Seattle SuperSonics (1980-82) and the Denver Nuggets (1982-91). Hanzlik was the head coach of the Nuggets during the 1997-98 season.
