LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The top-ranked Notre Dame baseball team had its 10-game winning streak snapped after the 16-11 loss to Louisville Friday afternoon at Jim Patterson Stadium.

How It Happened

As has been the case this season, the Irish scored first on the afternoon with three runs in the first inning. Carter Putz legged out an infield single to score Spencer Myers for the first run of the game. Jack Zyska stepped in next and deposited a 3-2 pitch into the parking lot for a two-run blast. It was Zyska’s fourth home run of the season and put the Irish up 3-0.

Louisville answered right back in the bottom of half of the first. They plated five runs, helped by a three-run home run by Levi Usher, that gave the Cardinals a 5-3 lead after the first inning.

The Irish tied the game up in the third with a two-out hit from Jack Brannigan. His single dropped in to right field to score Ryan Cole and then an error from the right fielder scored Putz as well to tie the game.

The tie did not last long as Louisville got the lead right back in the bottom of third. They scored three runs in the inning and regained the lead at 8-5.

Notre Dame jumped back in front in the top of the fifth with a four-run inning. The Irish had four-straight hits in the inning to get the scoring going. Brannigan legged out an infield single to score Miller. Coetzee III followed it up with a single through the right side to score Zyska and move Brannigan to third. LaManna drilled a double into the gap in right center that easily scored Brannigan and Coetzee III to give the Irish a 9-8 lead.

Louisville tied the game in the bottom of the fifth and then regained the lead in the sixth. They tied it on a single that dropped in center by Christian Knapczyk and then Cameron Masterman hit a solo home run in the sixth to give the Cardinals the lead. Louisville added one more run in the sixth and had an 11-9 lead after six.

Louisville added to its lead with five runs in the seventh to put the game out of reach.
