Women's Tennis Tames #16 Washington at Home

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The University of Notre Dame women’s tennis team knocked off the 16th-ranked Washington Huskies inside Eck Tennis Pavilion by a score of 5-2, Sunday afternoon. With the win, the Irish improve to 7-3 on the season and 6-1 at home.

“Today was a battle on both sides, Washington is a very well-coached and competitive program.” Head coach Alison Silverio said, “It was a complete effort and we are proud of our team’s FIGHT on and off the court. Our consistent mindset and hard work need to continue as we move into our ACC matches.”

The Irish started the match with a competitive doubles session, but ultimately took the No. 2 and No. 3 flights to earn the point. Meghan Coleman and Yashna Yellayi took down Zika Zupancic and Sarah-Maude Fortin, 6-3. Nibedita Ghosh and Julia Andreach combined for a 6-4 win over Zoey Weil and Kelly Lueng at No. 3 to take the point.

In singles play, the Irish took four of the six flights. Page Freeman won in straight sets over Fortin, 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2. Flights four, five and six were all straight-set Irish victories as Yellayi (6-4, 6-4), Coleman (6-0, 6-3) and Maria Olivia Castedo (6-2, 6-1), respectively.
