NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The University of Notre Dame women’s swimming and diving team has had a lot of changes thrown at them in the past year; thankfully, under first year head coach Mike Litzinger, they are off to a strong start, winning the 32nd Dennis Stark Relay meet. The Irish swam against four other teams, clinching first place with 240 points. They were followed (in order) by Illinois State, Wright State, IUPUI and Olivet Nazarene.

“This was a fun meet for our team; as coaches, we’re trying to evaluate our roster, and see what our strengths are,” Litzinger said. “Today was just a day to get off the blocks and see what we can put together. Today was more of an evaluation day, and we put together a line up where we thought we would be in a good place to win, and now that we have some swims under our belt, and times on the board and dives in the pool, we can take a step back and evaluate where we’re at in our training at this point in the season.”

“This meet was probably my favorite Dennis Stark meet of my career here,” senior Catherine Galletti says. “It was great seeing the crowd get so into the meet, and seeing everyone in the stands excited and cheering each other on.”

“I think that Mike [Litzinger] made it very clear to us that we should just get out there and race as well as we could, with it being our first meet,” freshman Ella Moynihan says. “Expectations were set pretty high, as they should be, and everyone held each other accountable and it was fun to just get out there for the first time as a team and everyone seems pretty confident in one another.”

Over the University fall break, the Irish will travel to Fort Myers, Florida, to train at Florida Gulf Coast University, before facing the Eagles in a dual meet October 24th. The Irish are next in action at home on October 30th, when they host Michigan State with the men’s team. In addition to the swimming competition, the Irish have joined a national challenge to fundraise for breast cancer research, competing head-to-head with nine other teams nationally (see full details here).
