Women's Distance Dominates At GVSU Bill Clinger Classic

ALLENDALE, Mich. — The University of Notre Dame track & field program opened the 2020 calendar year with the GVSU Bill Clinger Classic on Friday at the Kelly Family Sports Center.

The Irish women distance group took center stage, picking up first-place finishes in the 800, mile and 3,000 events. Notre Dame took four of the top six spots in the mile, including first and second. AnnaSophia Keller won the event with a time of 4:54.37 and teammate Jessica Schneider turned in a personal record time of 4:55.98 for second place. Jocelyn Long (4:59.30) and Olivia Markezich (4:59.45) took fifth and sixth.

Notre Dame claimed three of the top six finishes in the 800 on the evening. Erin Sullivan turned in the best time of the night, clocking in at 2:12.61 to win the event. Laura DeVito ran her personal best time in the event with a 2:14.43 to take fourth and Jocelyn Young finished sixth with a mark of 2:17.63.

In the 3,000m race the Irish highlighted the event with first and third finishes. Both Erin Archibeck (9:45.54) and Katie Rose Blachowicz (9:53.03) hit personal record times to give Notre Dame two medalists.

Another event the Irish women controlled is the 60m hurdles. Notre Dame sent three athletes to the finals with Summer Thorpe winning the event with a time of 8.51. Right behind Thorpe was teammate Naya Sharp, finishing second in 8.57. The other finalist for Notre Dame was Madysen Hunter, who finished seventh with a mark of 9.00.

The women’s team also won a field event on Friday evening, as Sarah Flight cleared 1.65m in the high jump to tie for first in the event.

On the men’s side Colton Crum picked up another win in the pole vault, recording a career-best mark of 5.21m. The height ranks Crum fifth in program history for indoor pole vault.

Edward Cheatham stood out on the track for the men with an impressive performance in the 400, finishing second with a time of 49.12.

Another notable performance on the men’s side came from Antonio Villegas in the long jump, as the junior finished with the second-best distance of 7.13m.
