Irish Duo to Participate in USA Women’s National Team Training Camp

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Two current University of Notre Dame women’s basketball players will participate in the USA Women’s National Team training camp, beginning Monday, Sept. 3 and running through Wednesday in Columbia, South Carolina. Seniors Arike Ogunbowale and Jessica Shepard round out a camp of 18 players trying to qualify for the 2018 USA World Cup roster.

The USA Basketball Women’s National Team Player Selection Committee issued invitations to Ogunbowale, Shepard, Diamond Deshields, Tyasha Harris and Sabrina Ionescu, who all were not members of the 2018-20 USA National Team pool. However, all six have earned gold medals playing on USA Basketball junior teams.

The three-day camp will be capped by the Red-White intrasquad exhibition game on Sept. 5 at 7 p.m. ET at the University of South Carolina. Tickets are still available and can be purchased at the Lexington Medical Center Box Office located inside Colonial Life Arena or through ticketmaster.com.

After the camp, the team will travel to Bridgeport, Connecticut for an exhibition game against Canada on Sept. 8 at Webster Bank Arena, before closing out its domestic tour with Japan on Sept. 10 at George Washington University’s Charles E. Smith Center in Washington D.C.

This week’s training camp marks the national team’s final preparations for the 2018 FIBA World Cup, which will be held Sept. 22-30 in Tenerife, Spain.  The USA Women’s National Team Player Selection Committee will ultimately select a 12-player roster for the event.
