WOMEN THIRD AFTER DAY ONE OF NOTRE DAME INVITATIONAL

Notre Dame, Ind. – The Notre Dame men are in first place, while the Irish women are third after day one of the Notre Dame Invitational at the Rolfs Aquatics Center. The Irish men finished the day with 424 points, 54 points ahead of second-place Western Kentucky with 370 points. Division III-power Denison was third with 355.5 points, followed by Michigan State (301) and Toledo (245).

The Irish men won two events today as sophomore Jonathan Pierce (Newburgh, Penn.) won the men’s 500 freestyle in a time of 4:32.88, 4 seconds ahead of Michigan State’s Joe Brennan.

The Irish also made a strong showing in the one-meter diving competition as three divers placed in the top 11. Junior Herb Huesman (Cincinnati, Ohio) took the one-meter diving final for the Irish with a score of 491.15 points. Freshman Andy Maggio (Cincinnati, Ohio) finished third with 468.10 points.

The Notre Dame women, competing without three of their top swimmers, were third with 282 points after day one. Denison led the team competition with 362 points, followed by Michigan State (292), Notre Dame, Western Kentucky (233) and Wyoming (189).

Junior Kristen Van Saun (Lawrence, Kan.) won the first race of the day for the Irish in the women’s 500-yard freestyle. Van Saun’s time of 4:56.20 just edged Western Kentucky’s Sydney Mountford (4:56.28).

The Notre Dame 400 yard medely relay team of sophomore Kelly Hecking (Rutherford, N.J.), junior Kathleen Rimkus (Chantilly, Va.), senior Elizabeth Barger (Littleton, Col.) and senior Laura Shepard (Pound Ridge, N.Y.) took home another first place for the Irish in a time of 3:52.65. Each team will get a chance to move up in the team standing when competition continues again Friday, Dec. 3, with preliminaries at 10 a.m., and finals at 6:30 p.m.
