Women Swimmers Arrive In Fourth

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — The #22 Notre Dame women’s swimming team, led by junior Carrie Nixon, is in fourth place with 185 points after day one of the Minnesota Invitational in Minneapolis, Minn. Minnesota is in first place with 266 points, followed by Illinois (217 points) and Wisconsin (189 points).

Nixon won the 50-meter freestyle with a time of 25.65. In the morning preliminaries, Nixon set a meet record with a time of 23.04 in the 50-yard freestyle. Nixon’s morning time automatically qualifies her for the NCAA Championships in March.

The morning preliminary session are being swum in yards, while the evening session is being competed in meters as the 2000 NCAA Championships will be contested in meters.

The 400-meter medley relay team of sophomore Kelly Hecking, senior Shannon Suddarth, senior Alison Newell and Nixon finished second in a time 4:13.23. Minnesota was first with a time of 4:12.67.

Notre Dame placed third and fourth in the 400-meter freestyle as Alison Newell was third in a time of 4:16.32 and junior Kristen Van Saun was fourth in a time of 4:17.41. Both were “B” qualifying times for the NCAA Championship meet.

In diving action, Notre Dame sophomore Heather Mattingly placed third on the one-meter board with a score of 411.05. Tennessee’s Jaime Sanger won the event with 424.15 points. Irish senior Gina Ketelhohn was eighth with 363.50 points.

Other top finishers included the 200 freestyle relay team of freshman Liane Watkins, freshman Meghan Lynch, junior Brenda Reilly and sophomore Maureen Hillenmeyer, who was fourth in a time of 1:46.11.

The meet continues Saturday with preliminaries scheduled for 11 a.m., and finals set for 7 p.m.
