NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The Notre Dame women’s volleyball (4-5 overall, 1-0 BIG EAST) team broke a two-game losing streak and won its first BIG EAST match of the season with a 15-7, 15-5, 15-10 victory over visiting Seton Hall (7-8 overall, 0-1 BIG EAST). The win extended the Irish win-streak against conference opponents to 77.

In game one, Irish junior Mary Leffers (Tampa, Fla.) made her first start of the season after having surgery on her knee last April. Leffers allowed the Irish to jump out to a 9-4 lead. Notre Dame increased its lead to 14-4, before the Pirates scored a point on a kill by Paige Ellertson. The Irish lead, however, was too big for Seton Hall to over come, as Notre Dame won the game 15-7.

The Irish built on their momentum in game two. After the game was tied at 1-1, Notre Dame built a 8-1 lead before a service ace by Seton Hall’s Kadi Krus gave her team point number two. At 12-2 in favor of the Irish, Notre Dame sophomore Michelle Graham (Austin, Texas) replaced starter Denise Boylan (Lisle, Ill.) at setter. After another point by the Irish, Seton Hall scored three-straight points to pull the score to 13-5. A kill by Leffers and a kill by Emily Schiebout (Blaine, Minn.), put the game away for Notre Dame, 15-5.

The Irish built a 4-0 lead in the third game, but were unable to run away with the game. The Pirates took their first lead of the match at 7-6 on a hitting error by Jo Jameyson (Alvin, Texas). Seton Hall then scored three more points before Irish Coach Debbie Brown put Irish captain Lindsay Treadwell (Austin, Texas) back into the game. With Treadwell providing leadership to the team, the Irish scored the game’s final nine points to win the game, 15-10, and the match.

Notre Dame plays host to another BIG EAST conference opponent, Rutgers University, on Sunday, October 4 at the Joyce Center at 2 p.m.
