Women's Track and Field Third at Big East Championships

(NOTRE DAME, Ind.) – The Notre Dame men’s track and field team placed second, while the women’s took third at the 1999 BIG EAST Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Villanova, Pa., May 1-2. Irish sprinter Marshaun West (Sikeston, Mo.) received individual honors as the men’s Most Outstanding Track Performer, while Notre Dame got the nod for men’s Coaching Staff of the Year.

The Notre Dame men were edged out for first place in the last event of the afternoon – the 4X400-meter relay. With the Irish up 130-128.50 over second place Georgetown, the Hoyas won same height he cleared when he won the event in 1997. The final Irish event winner was junior Chris Cochran (Crystal Lake, Ill.), whose career best time of 46.86 in the 400 meters, gave the relay to claim 10 points, while the Irish finished third getting only six points to end up just two and a half points out of first place.

Despite the runner-up finish, the Notre Dame men’s squad claimed three individual titles and five second-place finishes in the second and final day of competition. One of the winners was West who placed first in the 200-meter race with a time of 21.53 after turning in a second-place time of 10.72 at 100 meters. Notre Dame indoor All-American Mike Brown (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.) won his second BIG EAST outdoor pole vault title by clearing 16-4 3/4, the him his first ever BIG EAST individual title after finishing fourth in the same event in 1998. Those claiming runner-up finishes included senior Antonio Arce (Palmdale, Calif.) with a time of 3:51.60 in the 1,500 meters, junior Phil Miska (Toledo, Ohio) with a time of 1:50.62 in the 800 meters, senior Jay Hofner (Wheaton, Ill.) with a mark of 185-1 in the hammer throw and Cochran in the 200 meters (21.54).

On the women’s side, the Irish post its best ever team finish at the meet with a third place following a ninth-place finish a year ago. Leading the way in the second day of competition was junior high jumper Jennifer Engelhardt (Battle Creek, Mich.) with her second straight BIG EAST outdoor title after clearing a meet record 5-11 1/4. Three other Notre Dame women’s track and field members took second place including freshman Liz Grow (New Braunfels, Texas) with a time of 53.38 in the 400 meters, senior Nadia Schmiedt (London, Ontario) with a time of 58.60 in the 400-meter hurdles and junior JoAnna Deeter (Glen Ellyn, Ill.), who ran the 5,000 meters in 16:22.46. Grow also picked up a third place in the 200 meters in a time of 24.33.

The Notre Dame men’s and women’s track and field squads will travel to Western Michigan, Saturday, May 8 for their final dual-meet of the season.
