COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Notre Dame women’s tennis team dominated on the first day of the season-opening Maryland Invitational, posting an 18-4 overall mark. Six players won two singles matches, advancing to the semifinals of one of the four flights. In addition, Irish doubles teams won three out of four first round matches. Play continues Saturday in the nine-team tournament.
In the singles ‘A’ Flight, junior Lindsay Green and freshman Caylan Leslie each won two matches to advance to the semifinals. Green dropped the first set in both of her matches, before rallying for victories. Leslie had little trouble, dropping just three games in each of her two matches. Also in Flight ‘A’, senior Kim Guy dropped her first match, but won to advance to the consolation semifinals and junior Nina Vaughan lost in the second round. In the ‘B’ Flight, sophomore Katie Cunha and freshman Alicia Salas both notched a pair of victories to gain berths in the semis. Emily Neighbors won two straight-set matches to secure a spot in the ‘C’ Flight semifinals, while junior Berica Day did the same in the ‘D’ Flight. Junior Michelle Hamilton rebounded from a loss to win her second match, advancing to the consolation semis in that flight as well.
In doubles action, the teams of Cunha and Guy and Green and Leslie each won opening matches to advance to the second round of ‘A’ Doubles. Meanwhile, Day and Hamilton are in the quarterfinals of ‘B’ Doubles after a first round victory.
