Women's Tennis Advances To Second Round In Singles and Doubles At Clay Court Championships

PIKESVILLE, Md. — Notre Dame senior women’s tennis All-American Michelle Dasso advanced to the second round of singles and doubles at the T. Rowe Price National Intercollegiate Clay Court Championships, the opening leg of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association grand slam at the Suburban Club of Baltimore County in Pikesville, Md. The fifth-seeded and 18th-ranked Dasso rallied to defeat Pepperdine qualifier Charlotte Vernaz 1-6, 7-5, 6-0 in her first match of the season. Dasso will play Wake Forest’s 31st-ranked Janet Bergman in the second round on Friday as Dasso looks for her third consecutive quarterfinal berth.

The eighth-ranked Irish doubles team of Dasso and junior Becky Varnum advanced to Friday’s second round with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Pacific’s Christiane Barthel and Diane D’Audney. Dasso and Varnum next will meet VCU’s 17th-ranked Martina Nedelkova and Andrea Ondrisova, three-set winners over North Carolina’s 30th-ranked Marlene Mejia and Erin Neibling.
