COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Notre Dame womens tennis team went a perfect 12-0 in five singles flights at the Buckeye Invitational at Ohio State on Friday. Senior All-American Jennifer Hall and freshman Becky Varnum each won a pair of matches to advance to the semifinals of the Flight No. 1 singles. Hall, ranked 24th in the country, beat West Virginias Meghan Cornwell 6-2, 6-2 and Marylands Lorraine Bittles 6-4, 6-2 to reach the semifinals where she will face Kansas 87th-ranked Kris Sell. Varnum won a pair of three-set matches to reach a semifinal match against Eastern Michigans Jenn Kansuthi. She beat Penns Anastasia Pozdniakova 4-6, 6-4, 6-0 and won a 2-6, 6-3, 7-6 (9-7) thriller over Miamis Natalia Soetrisno.

In Flight No. 2 singles, junior Kelly Zalinski won two matches by identical 7-6, 6-1 scored over Miamis Elin Bengtsson and Marquettes Julia Sapozhnikova. She will face the winner of Iowas Shera Wiegler and Indianas Jessica Anderson in the semifinals. In Flight No. 3, freshman Lindsey Green beat Illinois-Chicagos Emina Curic 6-2, 6-2. She will play Marquettes Sara Fernandez in the second round.

Freshman Nina Vaughan won two matches In Flight No. 4. She beat Eastern Michigans Manuela Todorova 6-3, 6-4 in the first round and Illinois-Chicagos Serena Xie 6-1, 6-1 in the second round. She will play the winner of Iowas Erica Johnson and Illinois Brooke Ferney in the semifinal. Sophomore Kim Guy cruised past Akrons Donna Peters 6-0, 6-1 in the first round and will play her second-round match against Georgia Techs Mason Miller on Saturday.

In Flight No. 5, junior Sarah Scaringe rallied for a 4-6, 7-6, 6-1 win over Indianas Karie Schlukebir in the first round and will face Kansas Julia Sidorova in the second round. Freshman Berica Day won 6-3, 6-3 over Ohio States Monica Koplas. She will play Marylands Kristine Curic as singles action resumes and doubles play begins on Saturday.
