MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — The Notre Dame women’s swimming and diving team stands in third place after the second of three days at the Minnesota Invitational. Minnesota leads with 691.5 points, while Wisconsin is second with 538 and Notre Dame third with 473. Iowa stands fourth with 377.5, and Pittsburgh sixth with 230. Utah, Iowa State and Northern Illinois round out the field.

A pair of freshmen turned in the best performances for the Irish on day two. Kelly Hecking finished second in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 56.84, behind the winning time of 56.57 by Wisconsin’s Gina Panighetti. Heather Mattingly finished second in the three-meter diving with a score of 480.50, just off Minnesota’s J.D. Rowe, who won with a score of 484.30.

Liz Barger placed fourth in the 100-meter butterly in 57.03, and Carrie Nixon finished eighth in 59.58. Shannon Suddarth, Kristen Van Saun, Tiffany O’Brien and Allison Lloyd finished ninth-12th in the 400 individual medley, while Anne Iacobucci was 15th. IN the 200-meter freestyle, Van saun and Nixon placed fifth and sixth in 1:53.54 and 1:54.13, and Tara Riggs was eighth in 1:55.17. Lloyd swam 1:06.09 for sixth place in the 100-yard breaststroke, while Brittany Kline was eighth in 1:06.41. Notre Dame’s relays took third and eighth in the 200 medley relay.
