Women's Swimming Finishes Ninth In The 400 Medley Relay At The NCAA Championships

March 16, 2000

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Notre Dame 400 medley relay team of seniors Elizabeth Barger (Littleton, Colo.) and Shannon Suddarth (Topeka, Kan.), junior Carrie Nixon (Ouray, Colo.) and sophomore Kelly Hecking (Rutherford, N.J.) finished first in the consolation finals, placing ninth overall Thursday at the 2000 NCAA women’s swimming and diving championships.

The Irish improved two spots from their 11th-place finish a year ago with a time of 4:07.00. The ninth-place finish is the best ever by a Notre Dame relay squad at the NCAA meet, earning all four swimmers honorable mention All-America honors. The honor is the third such for Hecking and Barger, the fourth for Nixon (who earned All-America honors earlier in the day in the 50 freestyle) and the fifth for Suddarth, who became the first Notre Dame swimmer to earn All-America honors in each of her four seasons.

Georgia, who leads the meet after day one, set a world, American and U.S. Open record en route to the 400 medley relay title with a time of 3:57.46. The Irish are currently 14th in team competition after day one with 35 points.
