Notre Dame, Ind. – The University of Notre Dame women’s swimming and diving team, ranked 13th in the nation, leads both Illinois and Iowa after day one of the Notre Dame Dual Meet Invitational at the Rolfs Aquatic Center. After a slow start, the Irish rebounded to a comfortable lead on both Illinois (75-35) and Iowa (67-43). Iowa leads Illinois in the other dual meet 73-37.
The Irish were led by senior diver Heather Mattingly, who set a new Notre Dame record on the three-meter board with an 11-dive score of 531.80. Mattingly broke her own school record of 526.75 set on Dec. 3, 1998. Mattingly led a 1-2 Irish finish in the event as sophomore Meghan Perry-Eaton was second with 500.00 points.
Irish sophomore Marie Labosky scored the first victory of the evening for the Irish, capturing the 200 individual medley in a time of 2:03.41. The Irish took three of the top four spots in the event as sophomore Lisa Garcia was second (2:04.29) and junior Amy Deger was third (2:07.82).
Senior Carrie Nixon continued her incredible season with a victory in the 50 freestyle in a time of 22.93. It was Nixon’s 17th individual event win this season. Notre Dame claimed the four of the top five spots in the race as sophomore Danielle Hulick was third (23.96), freshman Hannah Pawlewicz was fourth (24.09) and senior Kelly Hecking was fifth in 24.17.
Notre Dame’s final win of the night came in the 400 medley relay as the team of Hecking, senior Allison Lloyd, sophomore Lisa D’Olier and Nixon were first in a time of 3:48.86. Iowa was second and Notre Dame’s second relay of freshman Kristen Peterson, sophomore Laurie Musgrave, Garcia and Hulick was third in 3:49.25.
Other winners on the night were Iowa’s 200 freestyle relay team of Erin Strub, Erin Cochran, Katie Haeger and Allison Lyle in 1:36.48 and Hawkeye freshman Jennifer Skolaski in the 500 freestyle (4:55.61).
The Notre Dame Dual Meet Invitational continues Saturday with session two at 10:00 a.m. and session three at 6:00 p.m. The men’s swimming and diving team is also in action on Saturday at the Rolfs Aquatic Center against Oakland. Meet time is 2:00 p.m.
