Oct. 5, 2001

The Notre Dame men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams began the 2001-2002 season with a strong showing at the Notre Dame Relays at Rolfs Aquatic Center.

The men placed second in the 37th annual men’s meet, scoring 174 points. The Irish Swimmers took second in every event, including some neck-and-neck finishes with BIG EAST Champion Pittsburgh. The diving duo of Joseph Miller and Andy Maggio recorded the Irish’s only first place finish in the three-meter diving event. The Irish were followed by Washington, Valparaiso, and Marquette.

The Irish women, coming off a dual meet victory over Pittsburgh earlier in the day, won their 18th Relays by taking 10 of 12 events and setting meet record times in relay events (400, 500, and 800 Freestyle, the 400 Medley, the 400 Backstroke and the 400 Breaststroke). The Irish women were followed by Pittsburgh, Illinois State, Washington, Valparaiso, Marquette, and St. Mary’s.
