Women's Soccer Inks Another Top Class For 2005

Feb. 10, 2005

The Notre Dame women’s soccer team – two months removed from claiming the program’s second national championship – will be well-positioned to make another run at the title in the fall of 2005, with a strong core of returners set to be joined by four highly-regarded national letter-of-intent signees. The signees include three national-team players and are headlined by midfielder Brittany Bock (Naperville, Ill.), who recently was rated the world’s top female soccer player for her age group. The rest of the talented class includes defender Carrie Dew (Encinitas, Calif.), midfielder/defender Kerry Inglis (Fort Wayne, Ind.) and midfielder Rebecca Mendoza (Garland, Texas).

Notre Dame loses just two regulars – starting central backs Melissa Tancredi and Gudrun Gunnarsdottir – from the national championship squad while returning 13 of the top-15 players from that 25-1-1 team. The first-year players in 2005 actually will include two prep All-Americans from the 2004 freshman class – forwards Kerri Hanks and Susan Pinnick – who did not compete in the ’04 season (Hanks due to the Under-19 World Championship and Pinnick due to injury).

“This class does not have as many players as we would have added in other seasons but their quality as a group rates up there with any in our history and they are a class that should be considered among the best in the nation this season,” said Randy Waldrum, who is set to embark on his seventh season as head coach of the Irish.

“All four of these players will have an immediate impact in our program next fall. They are great people and great soccer players who are highly-competitive and committed to excellence. This is what Notre Dame is all about and our success has been built around players like these four.”

Each of the signees has some sort of connection to current or former Notre Dame players, as referenced below (also note that bio. capsules and comments from the four signees follow below).

U.S. Under-17 standout midfielder Brittany Bock recently was rated the world’s top player for her age group.

Bock recently earned the world’s top under-17 rating (from womensworldfootball.com) after emerging as one of the top players for the U.S. Under-16 and Under-17 National Teams. She is preparing for her senior season at Neuqua Valley High School after not playing high school soccer as a junior, instead opting to train with the Under-18 team from the Chicago Magic boys club that has been rated the nation’s top youth program. She also has starred on the highest level with her Windy City Pride team – losing in the 2002 national-title game to current ND player Ashley Jones and her SoCal United squad – and with the Team Illinois squad that won the 2003 Olympic Development Program national title (her future ND teammates Jen Buczkowski, Jill Krivacek and Kim Lorenzen also were members of that team).

“Brittany has been the captain of our youth national teams and will bring tremendous leadership qualities and a great physical presence to our program. She is a skillful player with deadly scoring ability to go along with great vision that allows her to set other players up for scoring opportunities,” says Waldrum.

“She also is truly a team player with such a warm and caring personality. We look for Brittany to have an immediate impact and she is a great fit for the program.”

Carrie Dew’s stellar all-around play in the defensive third includes a strong game in the air.

Dew – who joined Jones as co-captains of the Southern California state ODP team that won the 2004 national title – also has been a top player with the U.S. Under-16 and U-17 National Teams (she never has played on the same team with Bock, who often has played a year ahead) while captaining the San Diego Surf club program that, like the Chicago Magic, recently was rated the nation’s top youth club program (for girls teams).

“When we went looking for a replacement for Tancredi and Gunnarsdottir, it was evident that Carrie could be the perfect answer,” says Waldrum of Dew, who has also has helped La Costa Canyon High School win a pair of CIF state titles.

“She’s tactically smart, reads the game well and is great in the air. She is a very skillful player, with the ability to set play from a defensive position. She is very composed with the ball and is comfortable attacking out of the back. I felt she was the best central defender coming out of high school this year. She also has been a member of our youth national teams and has played at an extremely high level.”

The versatile Kerry Inglis is considered one of top rising young players in the Midwest region.

Inglis was a finalist for Indiana player-of-the-year honors and is one of the nation’s top emerging talents, starring for the ODP Region II team, the Fort Wayne Citadel club and Snider High School. Most recently, she was a starting outside back for the W-League’s Fort Wayne Fever team (summer ’04) that included a number of former and current Notre Dame players.

“Kerry reminds me so much of Kim Lorenzen, that player who is going to be a great college player. She is a great athlete, and is fast developing into one of the top players in this region,” says Waldrum.

“Kerry has the ability to play in multiple positions. She is technically sound and can compete both athletically and physically right away at this level, as shown by her success in the W-League as a high school junior. She is highly competitive and committed to her development – yet another great fit for our team.”

The high-flying Mendoza should add some flair to the 2005 Notre Dame midfield.

spacer.gif

Mendoza recently made her debut with the full Mexican National Team, where her teammates include former Notre Dame All-America defender Monica Gonzalez (who captained Mexico’s 2004 Olympic quarterfinalist team). Mendoza, who holds dual citizenship , continues Notre Dame’s pipeline to top Texas talent, playing for North Garland High School and one of the nation’s top club programs, the Dallas Sting.

“After spending the past four years playing the Mexican National Team, I’ve been trying to find a player with that `flair’ that the Mexican players have. Becca is amazingly talented on the ball, very quick and very technical – she clearly has that flair,” says Waldrum.

“She is a dynamic player who sees the field very well and doesn’t get rattled by pressure. I think Becca is going to be a great match for our possession-oriented style. The soccer community is really going to enjoy watching her play.”

Bock – who has played for the top-ranked overall men’s club program and 19th-ranked women’s club (Windy City) – and Dew join several current Notre Dame players whose former clubs were among the top-20 listed in the recent Soccer America rankings. Others include: the Sereno (Ariz.) Golden Eagles (#6; sophomore forward Molly Iacrocci), the Dallas Texans (#7; sophomore midfielder Claire Gallerano, freshman goalkeeper Lauren Karas and Hanks), the Eclipse (Ill.) Select (Buczkowski, Krivacek and Lorenzen) and So-Cal United (Jones).

The yearly addition of top-ranked classes has the Notre Dame program fortified for years to come. In fact, just three prospective regulars from the upcoming 2005 team – forward Katie Thorlakson, forward/defender Candace Chapman and goalkeeper Erika Bohn – will be playing their final season of eligibility with the Irish in ’05, meaning that plenty of top-level talent will be set to return in 2006 as well.

Notes: With recent changes in NCAA rules allowing for updated news releases on signees, be sure to check back to und.com during the spring and summer for updates on the incoming Irish players (and the veterans) … Krivacek’s nicknaming skills could be needed next fall as the past few years have seen Notre Dame sign four players with different versions of the name Carrie: former player Kari Kennedy, Kerri Hanks, Carrie Dew and Kerry Inglis.

Brittany Bock earned the 2003 Golden Boot Award after helping Team Illinois win the 2003 ODP national title (three of her future ND teammates also were members of that team).

BOCK ON HER DECISION – “I feel extremely blessed to spend the next four years of my life attending Notre Dame and playing soccer with such an incredible group. Long before my official visit, I knew I wanted to be a part of the storied tradition of the Irish. Over the last few years there have been subtle hints reaching out to me everywhere, telling me that Notre Dame was to be part of my future. The first time I actually came on campus, I immediately got chills. There was something about Notre Dame that I just couldn’t get out of my mind. This school is a perfect fit for me. The whole ND community, right down to the ushers at the football game, went out of their way to make me feel like family. Visiting several times, I got the chance to stay with Kim Lorenzen, Jen Buczkowski and Amber McMillin and I felt at home with them. When I saw the outstanding talent of the team, I was so excited that I wanted to jump on the field immediately to play with them. The combination of athleticism and skilled style of play, along with great coaching, is exactly what I was looking for in a college team. Family, loyalty, and demonstrating mutual respect of others are very important to me. I will strive to be the type of player and person that my teammates and coaches can count on, both on the field and in the classroom. Notre Dame will provide me with an excellent education, allow me to grow in my faith, and bring me to the next level of athletic competition. As I look back on all the great things so far, I realize that the best is yet to come!”
