For the second time in the opening three weeks of the 2010 season, junior defender/co-captain Jessica Schuveiller was named to the Top Drawer Soccer National Team of the Week, just one of many weekly honors collected by Fighting Irish players on Monday.

Women's Soccer Duo Earns National Honors

Sept. 29, 2009

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – For the second time in as many days, two Notre Dame women’s soccer players have been honored for their play last week, earning honors from a pair of national media outlets in announcements made on Tuesday. Sophomore defender/tri-captain Jessica Schuveiller (Plano, Texas/Plano West), the reigning BIG EAST Conference Defensive Player of the Week, was tapped for a place on the Soccer America National Team of the Week, while junior forward Lauren Fowlkes (Lee’s Summit, Mo./St. Teresa’s Academy), the current BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week, is appearing on the new Top Drawer Soccer National Team of the Week.

Schuveiller garnered her first national award following a 2-0-0 week that included a shutout for the Fighting Irish. The sophomore also helped Notre Dame limit its opponents to 10 shots and just three shots on goal in the two wins. In a 2-1 win at Cincinnati on Sept. 25, Schuveiller scored the gamewinning goal (an unassisted tally) with 8:08 left in regulation. She is the first Fighting Irish player to earn a place on the Soccer America squad since Nov. 11, 2008, when Carrie Dew was accorded that distinction.

Fowlkes likewise is a first-time national honoree after totaling four points (on two goals) in Notre Dame’s victories last weekend. Fowlkes scored the game-tying goal with 12:46 left in the 2-1 win at Cincinnati, before potting the lone score in a 1-0 win over Louisville this past Sunday at Alumni Stadium. On the year, Fowlkes is tied for the team lead with a career-high five goals and has scored in three of the last four matches. She is the first Fighting Irish player to make the Top Drawer Soccer weekly squad since Dew was named the TDS National Player of the Week on Nov. 10, 2008.

No. 10/8 Notre Dame (7-3, 3-0 BIG EAST) heads on the road for their next four matches, beginning this weekend with a two-match swing to West Virginia and Pittsburgh. Friday’s contest at WVU (4-3-4, 1-1-1) is slated for 6 p.m. (ET) and will be televised live to a national cable audience by ESPNU. Notre Dame then will travel to Indianola, Pa., on Sunday to take on Pittsburgh (5-2-3, 0-0-3) in a 1 p.m. (ET) contest.
