NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The Notre Dame women’s lacrosse team failed to convert on numerous scoring opportunities throughout the game and could never complete a comeback as Ohio State handed the Irish their second consecutive loss with a 15-12 win at Moose Krause Stadium. Erin Anderson scored four goals and added five assists to lead the Buckeyes. Kerry Callahan had three goals to lead the Irish, who fall to 3-2 with the loss. Ohio State improves to 4-3. Notre Dame will play Connecticut on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. at Moose Krause Stadium after Connecticut and Ohio State play at Notre Dame on Saturday.
Ohio State outshot Notre Dame 33-26 and held a decisive 37-22 edge in groundballs. The Irish won 17 of the 29 draws but committed two more turnovers, 23-21. Megan Barnett made 14 saves in net for Ohio State, while Carrie Marshall have 12 saves for Notre Dame.
Notre Dame’s only lead came at 1-0 on a goal by freshman Maureen Henwood at 29:24. Ohio State built leads of 2-1 and 4-2 but the Irish rallied for ties each time. The Buckeyes then scored the final two goals of the first half to a 6-4 lead at halftime and never trailed again.
Twice the Irish cut the lead to one goal in the second half but never scored an equalizer. Anderson scored twice to put the Buckeyes ahead 14-10 for their largest lead of the game, but Callahan netted back-to-back goals to cut lead to 14-12. Notre Dame, which won 10-9 at Ohio State last year by scoring the game’s final three goals in the final 6:11 of the game, could complete the comeback. Kylee Reade scored with 34 seconds remaining to clinch the win for Ohio State.
