April 18, 1999

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The Notre Dame women’s lacrosse team dropped its final home game of the season as 16th-ranked Yale built a 7-3 first-half lead and held on for a 14-10 win over the Irish on Sunday. Freshman Amanda Walton scored five goals to lead the 11-2 Bulldogs, who beat third-ranked Duke 6-5 on Saturday at Notre Dame. Irish sophomores Maura Doyle and Lael O’Shaughnessy and freshman Natalie Loftus each netted three goals for Notre Dame, which falls to 8-5 with its third straight loss to a ranked team. Senior captain Kerry Callahan scored a goal in the first half to extend her goal-scoring streak to 27 games. The first half was played outside at Moose Krause Stadium before the referees moved the game inside to the Loftus Sports Center in the second half due to rain.

The game opened with a wild first six minutes which saw the teams score seven goals before either goalie had recorded a save. Yale built a quick 2-0 just 50 seconds into the game before the Irish used goals by Doyle and O’Shaughnessy to tie the game at 25:58. Kate Flatley put Yale ahead 3-2 just nine seconds later before O’Shaughnessy tied the game again 55 seconds later at 24:54. Yale matched the Irish once again as Vanessa Kerry scored at 24:22 to put the Bulldogs ahead for good at 4-3.

The Irish had a number of chances to cut the lead to one goal but could not score again in the second half and allowed a goal at 2:17 as Yale led 8-5 at halftime.

Loftus opened the second half inside with a goal 54 seconds in to pull the Irish to within two goals. Yale responded with goals at 25:31 and 20:29 to build a 10-6 lead.
