Women's Golf To Close Out Fall Schedule At The Pine Needles Collegiate Tournament

Southern Pines, N.C. – The Notre Dame women’s golf team finishes the fall portion of the 2002-03 schedule on Nov. 4-5 when the Irish travel to Southern Pines, N.C., to play in the Pine Needles Collegiate. The tournament, hosted by North Carolina State and Rollins College will be played at the par 71, 6,017-yard Pine Needles Golf Course.

The Teams: The 11-team tournament field includes: Baylor, James Madison, Miami, Minnesota, North Carolina, North Carolina State, Notre Dame, Richmond, Rollins, Stetson and Yale.

Dates and Times: Monday’s (Nov. 4) action will feature 36 holes of play beginning at 8:30 a.m. with a shotgun start. The second round will begin at approximately 1:00 p.m. (EDT). On Tuesday (Nov. 5), the final round will start with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m.

Irish Lineup: Coach Debby King will take six golfers to North Carolina led by junior Shannon Byrne (Arlington Heights, Ill.). A pair of freshmen – Sarah Bassett (Spokane, Wash.) and Katie Brophy (Spokane, Wash.) – will play at number two and three. Senior Terri Taibl (Elm Grove, Wis.) will be in the four spot with junior Rebecca Rogers (Alpharetta, Ga.) rounding out the scoring lineup. Freshman Lauren Barbir (Montgomery, Texas) will play as an individual participant in this week’s tournament.

Last Tournament: The Irish finished eighth among 11 teams at the Adidas Fall Invitational at Port St. Lucie, Fla. on Oct. 21-22. The Irish shot rounds of 320-305-307 for a 932 total. Shannon Byrne led the Irish with a tie for 17th place as she shot 76-79-75 for her best 54-hole total of 14-over par 230. Sarah Bassett was a stroke behind at 231 after bouncing back from an opening round 86 to shoot rounds of 71 and 74. Bassett’s second round 71 ties for the second lowest round ever by a Notre Dame women’s golfer. Katie Brophy (81-75-79-235) tied for 27th while Taibl was 38th (82-80-79-241). Rogers and Barbir played as individual participants with Rogers shooting a 248 and Barbir a 251.

Irish Leaders: Notre Dame has four golfers with averages under 80.00. Sarah Bassett leads the team with a 78.08 average after playing in four tournaments. Katie Brophy is second with a 79.13 average in five tournaments. Shannon Byrne has also played in five tournaments and has a 79.80 average. Freshman Lauren Gebauer, who is not playing in this week’s tournament, owns a 79.25 average in four tournaments.
