Women's Golf Tied For Ninth At Lady Buckeye Invitational

Columbus, Ohio – The Notre Dame women’s golf team fired rounds of 317 and 319 for a 636 total and is tied for ninth after 36 holes at the Ohio State Lady Buckeye Invitational. The Irish are tied with the University of Toledo and will go into Sunday’s final round 39 strokes behind tournament leader Kent State.

The Golden Flashes have a six-stroke lead over second-place Ohio State after shooting rounds of 300 and 297 for a 597 total. The Buckeyes shot a 36-hole total of 603 (301-302) on their home course, the par 72, 6,037-yard Scarlet Course. Michigan State is third with a 604 (305-299), Indiana is fourth with a 614 (302-312) and Purdue rounds out the top five teams with a 620 (307-313).

Individually, Kent State placed three golfers in the top five led by Gabby Wedding’s three-over par 147 (79-68). That gives her a two-stroke lead over teammate Martina Gillen (74-75), Michigan State’s Emily Bastel (78-71) and Ohio State’s Natalie Aber (74-75) as each golfer shot five-over par 149. Kent State’s third golfer in the top-five is Veronique Drouin (74-76) who is tied for fifth with Ohio State’s Allison Hanna (76-74) with six-over par totals of 150.

For the Irish, freshman Karen Lotta (Los Angeles, Calif.) continues to be Notre Dame’s top golfer as she is tied for 11th after 36 holes. Lotta, who has four top 10 finishes already this season, shot rounds of 75 and 78 for a nine-over par 153. Senior Lauren Fuchs (Louisville, Ky.) was Notre Dame’s second-best finisher as she is tied for 48th with a 161 (78-83).

Fellow senior Kristen McMurtrie (Calgary, Alb.) is tied for 50th with a 162 (84-78), sophomores Rebecca Rogers (Alpharetta, Ga.) and Shannon Byrne (Arlington Heights, Ill.) tied for 59th with 164 totals. Rogers shot a pair of 82’s on the day while Byrne opened with and 83 and followed with an 81 on the way to 164. Terri Taibl (Jr., Elm Grove, Wis.) closed out the Notre Dame participants as she is tied for 71st with a 168 (82-86).

The Irish close out the 2001-02 schedule on Sunday morning with the final round of play. The teams will tee off at 8:30 a.m. (EST).
