Women's Golf Resumes Play At The Lady Northern Invitational

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The women’s golf team will travel to West Lafayette, Indiana to take part in the 2008 Lady Northern Invitational on October 18 & 19. Purdue University is hosting the two-day, 54-hole event at the Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex. The tournament will be played on the Kampen course. A shotgun start at the par-72, 6,276 yard course is slated for 9:00 a.m. on both days and features a 14-team field.

FORMAT: Each team’s lineup will be comprised of five golfers with the lowest four scores for each round counting towards the overall team score. The tournament will consist of 54 holes. On Saturday, each golfer will play 36 holes while Sunday will featuring one 18-hole round of play.

FIELD: A field of 14 teams will take to the Kampen Course greens. In addition to the Irish, the teams participating include Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Iowa State, Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Northwestern, Ohio State, Penn State, Purdue, Toledo and Wisconsin.

NOTRE DAME LINEUP: Six members of the traveling contingent will comprise the Irish lineup while one additional Notre Dame golfer will play as an individual entrant. The travel party includes senior captain Lisa Maunu (St. Thomas, Ontario/Parkside Collegiate Institute), juniors Annie Brophy (Spoakne, Wash./Gonzaga Prep) and Kristin Wetzel (Middletown, N.Y./Hilton Head Prep), sophomores So-Hyun Park (Seoul, South Korea/Bradenton Prep) and Katie Conway (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) and freshman Becca Huffer (Denver, Colo./Littleton HS).

LAST TIME OUT: The Notre Dame women’s golf team captured the Heather Farr Memorial tournament and established a school record, carding a minus-six (858) at the par 72, 6,211-yard Omni Interlocken Golf Course. Notre Dame finished five shots ahead of second-place Texas Tech. Maunu shot three consecutive under-par rounds to finish in a tie for fourth place with a minus-five 211. Sophomore So-Hyun Park (Seoul, South Korea/Bradenton Prep) finished in a tie for fourth with Maunu. Park’s minus-five 211 total included an Irish record-tying minus-six in the second round of play, which was also the lowest round of her career. Notre Dame also had a record setting performance in the second round as the team combined to shoot a minus-seven 281, shattering the old program record by four strokes.

IRISH BIRDIES: The most recent Golf World/NGCA poll (released on October 15) has the Irish in the Receiving Votes category (35) … Lisa Maunu is the only Irish golfer to have all nine of her rounds count towards team scoring this season … In the second round of the Heather Farr Memorial, So-Hyun Park shot a minus-six 66, tied for the lowest round in women’s golf history at Notre Dame, a feat that was equaled by only by Maunu in the first round of last year’s Cougar Classic … Maunu leads the Irish in stroke average, checking in with a 72.22 mark … Maunu ranks an impressive eighth nationally in the total short game statistic category with a .648 mark … as a team, Notre Dame ranks tenth in the nation for par-four scoring with a 4.20 average and fifth in par-five scoring with a 4.91 mark … Notre Dame also ranks second nationally in total short game (.559) … Golf World has listed sophomore All-American So-Hyun Park as one of the top-50 female players to watch this season … Golfweek has listed Becca Huffer as a Notable Newcomer for the 2008-09 season … www.golfdigest.com has tabbed Becca Huffer as the preseason choice for BIG EAST Rookie of the Year honors.
