Tampa, Fla.-The Notre Dame women’s golf team shot a 313 in round one of the Snowbird Invitational on Thursday at the par 72, 5,940-yard Pebblecreek Golf Course.
The 313 total has the Irish eight strokes behind Arkansas State University’s round of 305. Arkansas State is in first by two strokes over second place University of Southern Mississippi (307). Southern Illinois University is third at the Northern Illinois University hosted tournament with a 312, one stroke ahead of the Irish heading into Friday’s play. In fifth place, the University of Toledo is one stroke behind Notre Dame with 314.
Individually, Arkansas State’s Shellie Wenzel is in the lead after the first round after shooting a one-under par 71, the only under par round shot in Thursday’s action. Breanne Hall of Toledo is in second, two strokes off the lead with a one-over par 73 and Southern Illinois’ Alison Hiller is third with a two-over par 74.
Notre Dame’s top golfer was junior Terri Taibl (Elm Grove, Wis.) who shot a four-over par 76. Taibl enters Friday’s final round tied with two other golfers for seventh place, five strokes off the lead.
Senior Kristin McMurtrie (Calgary, Alb.) and freshman Karen Lotta (Los Angeles, Calif.) are tied for tenth after shooting 77’s. Shannon Byrne (So., Arlington Heights, Ill.) is tied for 54th with an 83. Sophomore Rebecca Rogers (Alpharetta, Ga.) shot an 86 and is in 72nd place.
Senior Lauren Fuchs (Louisville, Ky.), participating in the tournament as an individual entrant, shot a round of 82 on day one.
