Women's Golf Finishes 14th At Tulane Green Wave Golf Classic

New Orleans, La. – The Notre Dame women’s golf team shot rounds of 352 and 334 to finish with a 36-hole total of 686 to finish 14th at the Tulane Green Wave Golf Classic.

The Irish shaved 18 strokes off Monday’s total score after battling cold and high winds during the opening round of play at the par 73, 6,008-yard Lakewood Country Club.

Notre Dame finished 85 strokes behind tournament champion Tulane (308-293) as the Green Wave shot a two-round total of 17-over par 601. That gave the Green Wave a 24-stroke win over Mississippi State (319-306-325). Campbell University was third (318-320-338), Memphis was fourth (321-318-339) and the University of Mississippi rounded out the top five with a 641 (330-311).

Individually, Tulane had five golfers among the top 11 in the field including tournament medalist Carolin Landmann who shot a three-over par 149 (74-75). That gave her a one-stroke edge over Mississippi State’s Anna Knutson who shot a four-over par 150 after a pair of 75’s.

Notre Dame’s top golfer was senior Kristin McMurtrie (Calgary, Alb.) who tied for 34th with rounds of 82 and 81 for a 163 total, 14 strokes behind Landmann. McMurtrie played as an individual entrant and her round did not count in the team scoring.

The top round for the Irish on Tuesday was shot by freshman Karen Lotta (Los Angeles, Calif.) who shot a five-over par 78. She had a DQ for the first 18 holes and did not figure in the standings even though her 78 was counted in Notre Dame’s team score.

Shannon Byrne (So., Arlington Heights, Ill.) tied for 45th with a 168 after rounds of 88 and 80. She was followed by sophomore Rebecca Rogers (Alpharetta, Ga.) who tied for 59th with a 172 total (85-87).

Junior Terri Taibl (Elm Grove, Wis.) tied for 68th with a 178 (89-89), Lauren Fuchs (Sr., Louisville, Ky.) tied for 71st (89-90-179) and Casey Rotella (Fr., Keswick, Va.) was 77th after rounds of 90 and 91 for a 181 total.

The women’s golf team returns to action at the Northern Illinois Snowbird Invitational that will be played at the Pebble Creek Country Club in Tampa, Fla., on March 14-15.
