Notre Dame women's basketball players (including fifth-year senior forward Devereaux Peters) will be tipping off the third year of their 'Spirit of Giving' community outreach program this weekend.

Women's Basketball To Take Part In Numerous Community Events This Month

July 14, 2011

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The Notre Dame women’s basketball team will fan out across Michiana several times in the coming weeks for numerous events associated with its “Spirit of Giving” community outreach program, and fans are encouraged to “get in the Spirit” this summer, right along with the Fighting Irish.

The fun begins from 5-8 p.m. (ET) Friday (July 15), when several Notre Dame players will be participating in the Irish Experience Camp at Heritage Hall (second floor of Purcell Pavilion at the Joyce Center, enter via Gates 1 & 2). The Irish Experience Camp is a free multi-sport & life skills development program designed to embody the five “pillars of success” of the Notre Dame Department of Athletics — Excellence, Education, Tradition, Faith and Community. These series of camp sessions (which also will be held at the same time and location on July 24 & 31) are designed to give children in the Michiana community the ability to visit the Notre Dame campus and have their talents, gifts and abilities nurtured and developed within the holistic philosophy carried out by the Notre Dame Department of Athletics. The goal of this program is to give local youth a taste of the 360-degree human development that all Fighting Irish student-athletes experience on a daily basis — THE IRISH EXPERIENCE!

Next Monday (July 18) from 4-6 p.m. (ET), members of the Notre Dame women’s basketball team will be on hand at the YWCA of St. Joseph County (1102 Fellows Street in South Bend) to take part in an arts & crafts session with area children. For more information on this event, please contact Amanda Ceravolo at the YWCA (574-233-9491; aceravolo@ywcasjc.org).

The next morning from 10-11 a.m. (ET), the Fighting Irish will visit the senior citizen residents of the Holy Cross Village assisted living center near the Notre Dame campus (54515 State Road 933 North). For more information, please check with Laurie Krcmaric (574-261-5402; LKrcmaric@holycrossvillage.com).

A day later, Notre Dame women’s basketball team members will be among the featured guests at the Merrifield Park Summer Camps, participating in the event from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. (ET) at Merrifield Park (1000 East Mishawaka Avenue in Mishawaka). The camp is organized for those children whose families cannot afford to send them to other camps, with more details available by contacting Sally Obren (574-309-2798; sallyobren@gmail.com).

The Notre Dame women’s basketball “Spirit of Giving” program began in the summer of 2009 and is an ongoing series of community outreach events that the Fighting Irish players, coaches and support staff participate in at various locations across Michiana.
