Women's Basketball To Hold Second Annual Pink Zone Spin-A-Thon

Jan. 12, 2012

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The Notre Dame women’s basketball team will take part in the second annual Pink Zone Spin-A-Thon on Jan. 20-22 at two locations — the Rockne Memorial Building on the Notre Dame campus (Jan. 20-21) and the Knollwood Country Club in Granger, Ind. (Jan. 21-22). Fighting Irish players, as well as staff members, including head coach Muffet McGraw, will be on hand from 5:00-6:00 p.m. (ET) both days to ride stationary bikes and provide encouragement for other riders in the unique event, which will go for 24 hours straight at each location (noon (ET) Friday at the Rockne Memorial; 8 a.m. (ET) Saturday at Knollwood).

This year’s event once again is a collaboration between the Notre Dame women’s basketball team, the Notre Dame Department of Athletics and its Office of Recreational Sports (RecSports), the Notre Dame College of Science and Knollwood Country Club. The goal is to fill 24 spinning bikes for the entire 24 hours at each location and raise a total of $60,000 for the Pink Zone initiative, a global effort by the members of the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) to raise money for breast cancer awareness and research (also known nationally as Play4Kay).

Teams of riders, or individuals are welcome to participate in the event, with a tax-deductible donation of $50 per hour per bike. Supporters who do not wish to ride in the event also may donate to a volunteer that will be riding — and the bikes also are available for purchase ($1,200 each), with the buyer able to decorate the bike and dedicate it to a breast cancer survivor.

Funds raised at the Spin-A-Thon will be part of the overall donation total generated by the Notre Dame women’s basketball program for this year’s Pink Zone initiative (which is detailed on the official Notre Dame Pink Zone web site at www.und.com/pinkzone). These funds will go to the Foundation of Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center’s Women’s Task Force, which includes Secret Sisters Society and Young Survivors Group.
